  2. Prelude for Solo Horn

    Starting at: $4.00

Solo work that explores the technique of stopping the horn. Composed for Marvin Howe.

In 1972 THE HORN CALL published part of a short treatise by Marvin Howe on Stopped Horn (1968).  In this short treatise, Marvin Howe discussed an effective method for improving stopped horn technique. The essential statement was that closing the hand in the bell of the horn, lowers the pitch to a half-step above the next lowest partial in the harmonic series.”  The subsequent letters to the editor of THE HORN CALL became what was known as “The Great Stopped Horn Debate.”  Rather than write a letter to the editor, I chose to compose this Prelude—to illustrate the techniques discussed by Marvin Howe.  (REF)

Interestingly enough, the review of this composition also became an ongoing discussion between the reviewer-Dr. Gayle Chesebro, the Editor of the Horn Call-Paul Mansur, and Dr. Howe.   So, this composition, itself, also became part of “The Great Stopped Horn Debate”!

In many ways the composition is a dialog between the outdoor horn-with little fanfares on open notes of the harmonic series-and the indoor horn-with open-stopped glissandi-created by closing the right hand inside the horn.  In the end, regardless of whether one is projecting open notes or stopped notes, the harmonic series always wins the debate! Grade: 5 University Division Solo Horn Selection--American Horn Competition, 1991, 1994, 1997, & 2001.

  5. Randall Faust's - Holiday Songs for Two Horns (2022) Arranged by Randall Faust

    Starting at: $10.00

A wonderful collection of fifteen Holiday Songs arranged for two horns by Randall E. Faust. Playing Horn Duets has provided some of the most enjoyable moments for me in Horn lessons-both as a student and as a teacher. A couple of years ago, during the Covid-pandemic lockdown, I recorded several of the following duets as part of the project for the Knox-Galesburg Symphony. The recordings of the duets were used as part of a special KGS project that provided Holiday music in support of front-line medical workers. Subsequently, some of my students have also enjoyed playing these. These duets are being published so that more hornists may perform them. I hope you find these arrangements interesting and enjoyable! -Randall E. 6. Solo Studies for the Healthy Hornist for Solo Horn (2022)

    Starting at: $10.00

This collection: Solo Studies for the Healthy Hornist contains ten solos of varying styles. Specifically written for the younger student in mind, the studies in this book will be interesting and challenging to more advanced players as well. When I retired from Western Illinois University in 2018, the focus of my teaching changed. No longer was I working with graduate students-or even undergraduate students who were doing more advanced projects on Wagner Tuba or the Natural Horn; many of my students, then, were in the younger years of high school or junior high school. So, even though I was older, I was spending more time with younger students. So, as I was spending more time teaching these younger students, I became more attuned to their activities in band, dance, and various athletic pursuits. As a result, let me give special thanks to these students who provided inspiration and test runs of these solo studies: Noah, Ernesto, Jack, Elena, Emily, Anabelle, Lorelei, Brooks, and Carter. Their energy and imagination have been an inspiration for these Solo Studies. Learn More

  8. Berceuse, Op. 40, No. 2 by Amy Beach arranged for Horn and Piano by Andrew Sehmann (2022)

    Starting at: $15.00

This Berceuse is from a collection of character pieces composed by Amy Beach in 1898: Three Compositions: “La Captive,” “Berceuse,” and “Mazurka.” The Berceuse is a short lullaby in ternary ABA form. This version of the work does not remain at pitch but instead has been lowered by two octaves to allow it to fit comfortably on the horn. Some of the markings have also been adjusted to make sense on horn compared to the original. The Berceuse is part of a series of arrangements meant for a wide group of hornists-from developing players looking for a work for a festival performance -to the professional hornist searching for a lyrical character piece for a recital. This set also includes works by Cui, Grieg, and Humperdinck. Beach's Berceuse is the most difficult of this set of arrangements. These arrangements are of moderate technical difficulty, and are meant to test numerous aspects of horn playing outside of high playing. The Berceuse includes the study of ornamentation, middle register endurance, and the study of the sharp key-D major concert. Grade: 3-4 Learn More
  9. a rainBow of orange above the Green-Rhapsodic Variations for Triple Horn Choir (2021)

    Starting at: $25.00

This composition - a rainBow of orange above the Green - includes some joyful references to some of my past visits to the BGSU campus-as well as the many happy remembrances of four and a half decades of college teaching. This set of rhapsodic variations depicts a day in the life on a college or university campus starting from the colorful dawn-walking across the campus, hearing the fragments of music in the warm-up sessions in the music building, the classes-some informative and some pedantic, the inspiring moments of repose in the library and art gallery, the excitement of the band playing at an athletic event, and a concert where singers and instrumentalists all come together on stage to perform a final hymn of the school. Like many of my compositions, this work is a set of variations on a theme. Sometimes the theme is a hymn tune or a chorale. Sometimes it is set of variations on a more abstract cantus firmus. In this case, it is a theme found in the letters B, G, C, F, and A! The Three Horn Choirs consist of Choir I: Horn 1, 2, and 3; Choir II: horn 4, 5, and 6; and Choir III: Horn 7, 8, and 9. Within the Three Horn Choirs: 1, 4, and 7 are High Horn Parts; 2, 5, and 6 are middle Horn parts: and 3, 6, and 9 are the Low Horn Parts. As the conductor studies the score, one will see that this provides for many opportunities for antiphonal effects, solo passages for all ensemble members, and symphonic sonorities as one performs the composition. 10. Scherzo for Solo Horn (2020)

    Starting at: $10.00

COMPOSED FOR ANDREW BAIN One of the highlights of the summer of 2020 was the opportunity to participate in a series of internet-based Warm-Up Classes presented by Andrew Bain-Principal Hornist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and co-hosted by Rupal Bain-of their INVESTED MUSICIAN program. Impressed by Andrew's regular presentation of horn studies in a comfortable and friendly atmosphere, I was inspired to write this piece by the fact that he candidly discussed some of his own personal technical challenges in playing the horn. This Scherzo is dedicated to Andrew Bain, his ongoing artistry, inspiration, and good humor.
