In 1994, I was commissioned by Randy Gardner to compose a Quartet for Four Horns for a compact disc he was producing for Summit Records in collaboration with Michael Hatfield, Douglas Hill, and David Krehbiel. This Romanza was one of the four movements of that Quartet. In the Fall of 2016, I created this horn and piano setting of the Romanza for a series of recital performances, I was planning for the 2016-2017 academic year. -Randall Faust

Solo work that explores the technique of stopping the horn. Composed for Marvin Howe.
In 1972 THE HORN CALL published part of a short treatise by Marvin Howe on Stopped Horn (1968). In this short treatise, Marvin Howe discussed an effective method for improving stopped horn technique. The essential statement was that closing the hand in the bell of the horn, lowers the pitch to a half-step above the next lowest partial in the harmonic series.” The subsequent letters to the editor of THE HORN CALL became what was known as “The Great Stopped Horn Debate.” Rather than write a letter to the editor, I chose to compose this Prelude—to illustrate the techniques discussed by Marvin Howe. (REF)
Interestingly enough, the review of this composition also became an ongoing discussion between the reviewer-Dr. Gayle Chesebro, the Editor of the Horn Call-Paul Mansur, and Dr. Howe. So, this composition, itself, also became part of “The Great Stopped Horn Debate”!
In many ways the composition is a dialog between the outdoor horn-with little fanfares on open notes of the harmonic series-and the indoor horn-with open-stopped glissandi-created by closing the right hand inside the horn. In the end, regardless of whether one is projecting open notes or stopped notes, the harmonic series always wins the debate! $24.95Horn players need to transpose, yet until now, there has not been a complete method devoted to teaching this essential skill. This method begins by explaining why horn parts need to be transposed and then uses this historical information to provide the hornist with a concrete strategy to master transposition. After building skills through exercises, excerpts from the horn literature are presented for practical application. Helpful transposition tips, practice techniques, and musical advice enhance the musical examples. Learn More

Fleeting images of a Middle Eastern bazaar appear in muted colors that fade in and out. The morning begins slowly, as merchants get ready for the day ahead. Somewhere in the distance the bazaar begins and the marketplace builds in activity and excitement. The market activity peaks and gradually subsides, and the aftermath gives way to the evening. The dreamer is finally transported away from the Casbah with memories of the day's excitement trailing behind. -Jeffrey Snedeker, November 2016

Ancient Scenes for Bass Trombone and Piano was composed for and commissioned by the Bass Trombone virtuoso Jonathan Warburton.
During the year I was composing this work for bass trombone, I was reviewing some picture of a past vacation to Greece. Then, I started thinking how the sound of the bass trombone is often described as a "big block of sound," (like the big blocks of stone in the massive ancient temples.) Furthermore, (with the performance practice on historic natural horns excepted:, the modern trombone is arguably the modern brass instrument that is played more in the manner of its ancient ancestral brass instruments than any other modern brass instrument. So, the connection was made in my mind - and the idea of Ancient Scenes was born!
The composition is in two movements: I. The Temple at the summit, and II. The Stadium of the Ancient Games. Although I had pictures of those in Athens and Delphi in mind, ruins of ancient temples and stadiums exist throughout the world. So, the sound of the bass trombone is the perfect instrument to evoke the images of those universal and historic Ancient Scenes. June 2015
