A wonderful collection of fifteen Holiday Songs arranged for two horns by Randall E. Faust. Playing Horn Duets has provided some of the most enjoyable moments for me in Horn lessons-both as a student and as a teacher. A couple of years ago, during the Covid-pandemic lockdown, I recorded several of the following duets as part of the project for the Knox-Galesburg Symphony. The recordings of the duets were used as part of a special KGS project that provided Holiday music in support of front-line medical workers. Subsequently, some of my students have also enjoyed playing these. These duets are being published so that more hornists may perform them. When performed in its entirety is a major work for Solo Horn - equal in musical, dramatic, and technical challenge to many other works for Solo Horn—as well as works for orchestra and band - as performed by Professional and University Hornists. This work was commissioned by Nicholas Steffenhagen as a test composition for a research project for his Master's Degree at Illinois State University where he compared practice techniques of Professional and University Hornists. In 1994, I was commissioned by Randy Gardner to compose a Quartet for Four Horns for a compact disc he was producing for Summit Records in collaboration with Michael Hatfield, Douglas Hill, and David Krehbiel. This Romanza was one of the four movements of that Quartet. In the Fall of 2016, I created this horn and piano setting of the Romanza for a series of recital performances, I was planning for the 2016-2017 academic year. -Randall Faust

COMPOSED FOR ANDREW BAIN One of the highlights of the summer of 2020 was the opportunity to participate in a series of internet-based Warm-Up Classes presented by Andrew Bain-Principal Hornist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and co-hosted by Rupal Bain-of their INVESTED MUSICIAN program. Impressed by Andrew's regular presentation of horn studies in a comfortable and friendly atmosphere, I was inspired to write this piece by the fact that he candidly discussed some of his own personal technical challenges in playing the horn. This Scherzo is dedicated to Andrew Bain, his ongoing artistry, inspiration, and good humor.
